I received products from So Cozy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own and I will only share products and services I use that I think will help make your domestic life and parent life easier!
Are you scratching your head now?
You may not know this but I was a teacher for 7 years and worked in the schools from the age of 18 – 29. Being with children all day exposes you to many things, including germs and illness. My hands were usually raw from the amount of hand sanitizer I used. But no one word put the fear of God in me like the word “LICE”. I would do whatever I could to prevent lice from becoming an issue but it was always in the back of my mind working with children.
The Other Four Letter Word
This one word has the ability to make a sane person lose their mind and scratch their heads uncontrollably. Whenever I heard the word I would immediately freak out and worry about my exposure to this dreaded bug. As I write this I am scratching my head imagining them on my head.
When I was teaching, there were always suggestions from more seasoned teachers. These suggestions usually included old wives tales on ways to prevent lice from affecting you or your students. None of the suggestions usually reassured me in any way and I would just proceed with avoiding contact with anyone or anything until the fear subsided within me.
Clean Hair or Dirty Hair?
The one suggestion I always remembered was that they love clean hair. Damn. Being a person with thin, fine hair I had to wash it at least once a day to keep it from getting too greasy. And both of my kiddos have inherited my thin, fine hair.
I didn’t realize that in the process of trying to keep the greasy hair away I was actually removing my natural protection from lice. According to So Cozy’s site, “DON’T wash hair every day. The buildup of natural oils on the hair shaft makes it harder for lice to attach”. Here we moms thought we were doing the right thing by bathing our kids regularly but we may actually be upping their chance of getting that gross bug!
What is a paranoid mother to do?
I’m not going to gross you out on the details of having lice because you know what it is and what it takes to get rid of it. We can all agree it sucks and we would love to avoid it at all costs.
Which is why as a mother I am thankful that So Cozy has created their Boo line of shampoo, conditioner, and spray. It helps to ease my worried mind that I can help to prevent lice from happening in our house as opposed to dealing with the problem (infestation) later. When I was a teacher I would spray hairspray on the back of my hair to attempt to combat lice. But who really wants to spray their kid down with hairspray each day, it’s not the 80’s anymore.
I love that this product includes tea tree oil which smells amazing. Tea tree oil is one of the few essential oils I use and I use it on my skin and in my homemade cleaning products. I know what you are thinking, “but Domestic Realist you wouldn’t make your own cleaning products ain’t nobody got time for that.” Spoiler! I do make my own floor cleaner since baby boy is all over the floors and eats everything he finds. It’s one thing I feel like is worth the extra effort!
As a mother in a world of crazy chemicals and toxic products, I love that So Cozy is nontoxic. They do NOT use parabens, formaldehyde, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic color, and propylene glycol, like too many “children’s” products use. It is also alcohol, gluten, wheat, peanuts and tree nuts free if you have a child with allergies.
It’s so easy to go crazy worrying about which products contain which harmful chemical but I know their products are safer than most out there which helps me worry less. (And spend my time worrying about food chemicals instead! So much to worry about as a modern mother!).
How to use So Cozy Boo
It’s so easy to use the Boo system to prevent lice in your home!
- Wash your child’s hair with the Boo shampoo and conditioner every 2-3 days.
- Spray bedding, coats, and around your child’s neck and ears before school each day.
And of course remind your children not to share brushes, clothing, headphones, or any other items that are worn on the head or shoulders.
