I know! You didn’t expect me, of all people to be writing about Wally World, especially about the new Walmart Grocery Pickup Service.
Let me state this very clearly, I am one of Walmart’s biggest haters. I have never had a positive experience at Walmart. I honestly avoid the place like the plague. My Walmart philosophy is that I would rather pay more at Target or Amazon then go to Walmart everyday of the week. Do you get where I am going with this?
When I was first starting out in the adult world I attempted to shop at Walmart for food and other items thinking I was going to save money. The reality was that no matter what money I may have saved on paper, the experience proved time and time again not to be worthwhile. No matter what time of day I went or for how many items, there are never enough registers open to make the process quick. And forget about attempting to return an item to customer service, you may as well just keep it and lose the money.
Fast forward a few years later and I am now a mom of two that dreads grocery shopping. Trying to fit a baby car seat and toddler in the cart doesn’t leave any room for the actual groceries. Grocery shopping has become a family activity on the weekends so that I can wear the baby while hubby wheels the toddler in the cart and we can actually put groceries in the cart. We’ve even given the two cart method a try.
So when I saw an ad online for Walmart’s service I figured I should at least look into it to see if it is worth my time, or if it saves time and sanity:) The biggest selling point for me was that the ad listed you would receive $10 off your first order. When you are working to save money on groceries $10 off is a good start, especially on items you were planning to buy anyway.

Things to consider before ordering
The first thing to check, before ordering with Walmart Grocery Pickup, is to make sure the service is available in your area. You can simply do this by typing in your zip code. They then require that you register with their site in order to place an order.
For me, this was the start of my typical Walmart experience. It required me to change my password for an account I did not even know I had. Once, I completed that hurdle I was able to begin shopping.
Trying to learn everything I could about the service I quickly read through the FAQs. I could not find any mention of coupons, so I decided to call their customer service line. I asked if they accepted coupons on pickup orders. At this time, they do not accept paper coupons or their own digital coupons on pickup orders. This makes the service less appealing but they did reassure me that it should be possible in the future.
My next question was if I have the coupons at the time of pickup would they be able to adjust the receipt to reflect the coupons. I was not given a clear answer but was told I could go inside to have it adjusted like their price catcher policy*.
Since I am not a Walmart shopper I had no idea what this policy entailed. I did know that I was not interested in dragging the two kiddos into Walmart. Waiting on a line while the pickup groceries were sitting in my hot car to try to explain to an employee that I needed to apply some coupons to my order. I knew better and it defeated the whole purpose of ordering groceries for pickup.
*After making my first pick up order purchase I looked into the price catcher program and it is as simple as entering a number from your order. They track the items you bought and give you a gift card for the difference if they find any items cheaper somewhere else! Anything that gives me money back without me having to chase it down is worth my time!
Placing the order
I chose to order items that were not on sale at my usual store and were more of the necessities that do not have coupons. I figured it was smart to buy these with the $10 off since there weren’t much savings usually.
Before I started the order I went through Ebates, an online rebate site, to get cash back on the order as well. I always check to see if something I am ordering online can give me cash back this way. It may not be much back but it does add up over time!
(Click here to sign up to earn free cash back with Ebates using my affiliate link, you will receive $10 on your first qualifying order of $25!)
They suggest other items when you try to check out. This can be a pro or con depending on your mood. If you are in a hurry you may see something you forgot. If not, it may annoy you as it is one more step before you can checkout.
You then choose your pickup location, which only had one relatively close option for me. The others were 20-30 minutes away. Then you pick the date and pickup time.
When entering my card information the cursor kept moving to different spots which required me to enter the number 3 times. It saves the credit card information which isn’t something I like doing but it should save time on future orders.
When you review the order MAKE SURE TO ENTER THE COUPON CODE and press apply!!! I was so focused on everything else I almost forgot the most important part and the whole reason I was even ordering from Walmart! Mommy brain is real you guys!
As I reviewed the order, I saw that there was an item I wanted to delete and it required clicking the edit button which took me to a new screen that had me sign in to my account once again. ARGH. I had to click the item to reveal the quantity in order to remove it. This is too many steps.
After you review the order you can uncheck the substitute box if you do not want them to make a substitution if they are out of the item. Make SURE to re-enter the promo code!!! Tricky. It may be because I forgot to press apply the first time I entered it before editing the order. Either way, don’t forget to save yourself $10!
Once completing the order you will receive an email with the confirmation, time, items ordered, and a handy, dandy diagram of where to go to pick up the groceries.
The pickup process
About 10 minutes before the pickup window began I was shocked to receive a call. A nice employee named Chris informed me that my order was ready. Off I went to pick it up in the rain and without children 😉
At this point, the most difficult part of getting to the pickup area was navigating the Saturday afternoon traffic in the parking lot. There was a banner showing I was in the right spot and I pulled into a pickup parking spot at 4:18.
The sign told me to call the number listed to let them know I was there. Just as soon as I had pressed call on my phone a friendly man named Max arrived at my car window, in the rain. He asked me my name and off he went to find my order. Unfortunately, since I didn’t even realize I had had a Walmart account the order was under the first initial of my maiden name. It took an extra visit to my car to figure it out but then we were in business.
Max wheeled out a blue wagon with milk crate like baskets that stacked the bags of groceries. I opened the trunk and in went the groceries. He showed me on the detailed bill which items were substituted and that I was charged the lower price.
As he was loading the bags containing the produce, he displayed them to me. I must say it was a little strange since the first thing he showed to me were two English cucumbers, in a very seductive way. It was like what I would imagine the selection process in a brothel to be like, but I digress.
When Max finished loading he asked if I had any questions. I let him know it was my first time ordering and he quickly ran in to get me a goody bag! Nothing is more awesome in adult life than an unexpected goody bag! Woohoo!
Outcome of order
Within 12 minutes from when I pulled into the pickup area, my groceries were locked and loaded in my trunk and I was headed back home.
I’ve got to say that I was pleasantly surprised with how well the experience went. As I was leaving the house, the hubby gently reminded me that I should have an open mind and not expect the same experience I’ve had in the past with Walmart. And you know what, Hubby was right! It was quick, the items given were correct, produce looked good, and the dairy items had a reasonable use by date.
Sooooo….Surprisingly, I will definitely be using the service again as long as the same level of convenience and service continue.
